Most Gothic typefaces are highly decorative but difficult to read and barely legible, which is also the reason for its decline over time. With shifting design sensibilities and a renewed appetite for expressive forms, we saw the need for a new kind of Gothic, one that represents the modern state of being.
While Panic Press, an apparel brand rooted in modern dissent and radical self-expression was drawn to the rebellious spirit of Gothic, most traditional Texturas didn’t meet its modern design needs. They felt too ornamental, too rigid, and unusable across contemporary contexts. With Renegade, we aimed to revive and modernize Gothic typography by moving away from uniform proportions while retaining its historical character.
We used 16th-century calligraphic texts for inspiration and developed a defined system that pushes Textura into a more usable space without losing its essence.Renegade is a humanist variable Textura typeface, a family of five weights and six styles, built on four master forms: Regular, Black, Reverse Condensed Black, and Thin Condensed.
