Voting campaigns often rely on information. But participation is built through connection.For the voter awareness initiative in Basti, Uttar Pradesh, we created Basti Bhalu—a family of friendly, approachable bears inspired by the region's fauna. The mascots transformed an institutional message into something familiar, approachable, and memorable, encouraging citizens to participate in the democratic process.

The campaign centred around a simple idea: when public messages feel human, people are more likely to engage with them.
The Challenge
Voter awareness campaigns must communicate with people across ages, backgrounds, and communities.The challenge wasn't simply to tell people that voting matters. It was to create a visual language that people would recognise, remember, and emotionally connect with, making the message of maximum voter participation feel welcoming rather than instructional.
Our Approach
Instead of relying solely on traditional government communication, we built a mascot system rooted in the local identity of Basti.Inspired by the wildlife of the region, Basti Bhalu became a family of friendly bears designed to represent participation, community, and civic responsibility.

The mascots appeared throughout the awareness campaign, giving the initiative a recognisable face that helped make voter education more relatable and accessible.

To deepen community participation, we also conducted an engagement programme at the Basti Juvenile Home, where children were invited to reinterpret the bears through their own drawings and imagination. Their sketches became a celebration of participation itself, reinforcing that civic awareness begins with inclusion and conversation

The Outcome
According to the Election Commission of India's

General Election to Parliamentary Constituencies: Trends & Results,
Basti recorded the second highest voter turnout among all districts in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024 General Election.

While voter participation is the result of the collective efforts of election officials, volunteers, institutions, and citizens, we are proud to have contributed to a campaign that encouraged greater public engagement through accessible and relatable visual communication.

Mascots are more than illustrated characters.They simplify complex messages, create emotional familiarity, and make public initiatives easier to recognise across diverse audiences.For awareness campaigns, especially those led by public institutions, a thoughtfully designed mascot can become a trusted ambassador that encourages participation, conversation, and recall long after the campaign is seen.Sometimes, helping people engage begins with giving a message a friendly face.
